Topography 101

Any good hydrogeologist must know how to read a topographic map. A topographic map uses contour lines to show the shape of the land. 

Objectives:
  • Identify landforms on a topographic map.
  • Determine elevations of different points on a topographic map.
  • Draw contour lines when given elevation points.
  • Create your own topographic map.

Tasks:
1. Develop your topographic map skills by watching the How to Read a Topographic Map video, and then working your way through  the Topo Map Skills lesson.
2. Next,
 test your knowledge of contour lines by taking this online Contour Line Quiz. Write your answers on a sheet of paper, compare your answers with a neighbor, and then we'll check answers as a class.
